江门凭借广东省唯一的世界文化遗产——开平碉楼与村落，持续吸引着海内外游客。开平碉楼与村落以其复杂的中西合璧建筑装饰风格，展现了近代中西文化交融的蓬勃生机。这些碉楼曾于19世纪末20世纪初达到鼎盛，却因20世纪初居民陆续迁出而逐渐荒废。如何让这些世界遗产“活起来”？在拥有536座登记在册碉楼的塘口镇，当地政府、公益组织与建筑师正携手探索：通过创新策略激活历史空间，让传统村落重焕社区活力。

Guangdong's Jiangmen City has long been a popular tourist destination, attracting domestic and international visitors due to its iconic Kaiping Diaolou and Villages. Recognized as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site, Kaiping Diaolou and Villages features multi-story defensive houses that showcase a complex and vibrant fusion of Chinese and Western architectural and decorative styles.

The Diaolou reached their peak during the 1920s and 1930s, but many have since been overrun by weeds due to rural depopulation. How can this World Cultural Heritage Site be preserved? In Tangkou, a town with 536 registered Diaolou, the local government, NGOs, and architects have developed strategies to help communities thrive within these historic structures.

自力村

自力村碉楼群地处开平市塘口镇，作为世界文化遗产，是开平碉楼兴盛期的杰出代表。现存15座风格各异、造型精美的碉楼和居庐，多建于20世纪二三十年代，由当地侨胞为保护家乡亲人所建，既巧妙融合中西建筑文化，又与周边水塘、稻田构成如农耕水墨画般的景观，楼内完整保存的生活设施、生产用具等，更是近代华侨文化与生活的生动见证。

Zili Village

The Zili Village Diaolou Cluster stands as an outstanding representation of Diaolou (watchtowers) during their peak era and is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its 15 exquisitely designed watchtowers and residential villas, predominantly constructed in the 1920s–1930s by overseas Chinese to protect their hometown families, masterfully blend Chinese and Western architectural traditions. These structures harmonize with surrounding ponds and rice paddies to compose a landscape reminiscent of a Chinese painting, while their impeccably preserved domestic facilities and agricultural implements offer a vivid testament to modern overseas Chinese culture and livelihoods.

仓东遗产教育基地

仓东计划发起于2009年，是一项民间自发、学术引领、政府指导并支持的文化保育和活化项目，由开平市仓东文化遗产保育与发展中心具体管理和运作。自2011年以来，在学者、村民、投资者、政府等多方的共同努力下，修复了仓东村的焕业碉楼等八座建筑，此外，该项目通过社区营造、非遗传承、研学教育等方式，推动文化遗产的活态保护与创新利用。2015年，仓东教育基地荣获“2015年联合国教科文组织亚太区文化遗产保护奖—优秀奖”。

Cangdong Heritage Education Base

Launched in 2009, the Cangdong Project is a cultural heritage conservation and revitalization initiative that involves the local government, investors, scholars, and residents. Since 2011, the project has restored eight historic structures in Cangdong Village, including the Huanye Watchtower, and has been pushing forward living heritage protection through community engagement, promotion of intangible cultural heritage, and experiential education. In 2015, its educational base received the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Award for the outstanding revitalization efforts.

圩里有展

圩里有展是一个常年面向公众开放的艺术空间，通过组织策划各类乡创、人文、艺术等展览及交流活动，给地方实践者搭建展示和发声平台，并丰富社区的在地文化生活。

Tangkou Rural Exhibition

It is a year-round exhibition hall open to the public, showcasing local culture, lifestyles, and revitalization projects. 

IE公社

2025年5月，江门多地联合推出“IE公社”暨“无界创客”招募计划，邀全球创客赴江门创业旅居。塘口镇推出系列扶持政策吸引创客：提供每月100元人才公寓，联合商家开放超30个共享工位，符合条件的创业项目享最高30%投资补贴及贷款贴息，驻站作家享民宿8.5折……目前已有19个团队95名“无界创客”及32名作家进驻。

IE Commune

In May 2025, Jiangmen launched the "IE Commune" initiative with its "Boundless Makers" recruitment program, inviting global innovators to work and start businesses in the city. Tangkou Town offers tailored incentives: 100 RMB per month talent apartments, over 30 co-working spaces through business partnerships, up to 30% investment subsidies and loan interest subsidies for qualified startups, and 15% discounts on homestays for resident writers. Currently, 19 teams with 95 members of Boundless Makers and 32 writers have settled in Tangkou.

先锋开平天下粮仓书店

南京先锋书店曾被CNN、BBC评为全球最美书店之一。2021年，开平市塘口乡村旅游发展有限公司与南京先锋图书文化传播有限公司合作，对位于塘口墟的天下粮仓——5个“蒙古包式样”粮仓及附属建筑进行活化，改造为先锋天下粮仓书店。先锋天下粮仓书店作为华南地区首家先锋书店，于2023年11月开业，2025年上半年客流量达19.8万人次、营业额250万元，成为活化旧圩、推动塘口文旅发展的特色人文地标。

The Grand Granary Bookstore of Librairie Avant-Garde

Nanjing's Librairie Avant-Garde is recognized as one of the world’s most beautiful libraries by CNN and the BBC. In 2021, Nanjing Librairie Avant-Garde partnered with Tangkou to revitalize five grain storage buildings and their affiliated structures, which were originally built in the 1970s, transforming them into the Grand Granary Bookstore. The bookstore opened in November 2023, making it the first Librairie Avant-Garde branch in South China. Being a distinctive cultural landmark, it welcomed 198,000 visitors and gained 2.5 million RMB in revenue by mid-2025.

无名营造社

无名营造社最初设于日本京都，由关注中国乡土地域建筑实践的青年建筑师组成，主理人陈国栋2020年扎根塘口。其秉承“挖掘在地民俗建筑营造智慧，传承并实践新乡土建筑营造可能性”理念，与村民、工匠共同劳作，尊重在地营造智慧与习惯。目前开展了塘口工作室等四个建筑实践项目，乡村美术馆也已布展，致力于创造新空间机能，重构乡土建筑空间精神，搭建城乡对话平台。

Mume Design

Mume Design, originally established in Kyoto, Japan, is composed of young architects dedicated to rural architectural practices in China. The founder, Chen Guodong, settled in Tangkou in 2020. Guided by the philosophy of "exploring the wisdom of native construction techniques and realizing new possibilities for regional architecture," the studio collaborates with villagers and craftsmen through hands-on labor, honoring local knowledge and customs. To date, it has launched four architectural projects, including the Tangkou Studio, and curated a rural art gallery. These initiatives aim to innovate spatial functions, revive the spirit of rural architecture, and create a platform for dialogue between urban and rural communities.
