When taking Guangzhou Metro Line 18, Asia-Pacific journalists got a first-hand look at the speed and technological advances of China's urban rail transit during their visit to Guangdong for the Asia-Pacific Media Forum (APMF).
Bui Minh Long, editor-in-chief of Báo Tiền Phong, Vietnam, praised the train for its clean carriages, spacious seats and impressive speed. He said China's transport development offers splendid examples for Vietnam.
Imtiaz Ahmed, executive director of Bangladesh's Centre for Alternatives, a Dhaka-based think tank, was particularly impressed that the metro line features fully-automated operation. "China's driverless technology is developing so quickly," he said, adding that Guangzhou's smart city and transport development could also offer useful experiences for cities across the Asia-Pacific region.
Guangzhou Metro Line 18 is the 14th urban rail transit line to open in Guangzhou. It is China's first fully underground metropolitan express line, designed for speeds up to 160 kilometers per hour and featuring the "Greater Bay Area Blue" theme color. The first section, from Wanqingsha Station to Xiancun Station, began operations on September 28, 2021. The line is 58.3 kilometers long and includes 8 underground stations. It operates a mix of express and regular trains, with express services providing a direct 30-minute journey from downtown Guangzhou to Nansha.
To date, Guangzhou Metro Group has successfully launched 55 overseas projects, with a total contract value exceeding 5.1 billion RMB. Its operations span 19 countries and regions worldwide, including Southeast Asia, South America, and the Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions.
