In 1941, Hong Kong was occupied by the Japanese army, causing more than 800 Chinese mainland residents to be stranded in, many of whom were well-known cultural celebrities. At that time, the Dongjiang Column of the Guangdong People's Counter-Japanese Aggression Guerrilla Force led by the Communist Party of China escorted all those people back to the Chinese mainland.
To commemorate the almost 200-day rescue, the Memorial Hall of Chinese Cultural Celebrity Rescue was built in Shenzhen in 2005. It was listed in the fourth batch of Counter-Japanese War National-Level Memorial Facilities and Sites in 2020.
The memorial hall covers an exhibition area of 826 square meters, equipped with digital maps, immersive projections, cinemas and screens displaying information about the celebrities. Visitors can also download relevant articles and pictures from the memorial hall's media platform.
