In 1937, the War of Resistance Against Japanese aggression broke out. Due to its strategic location and strong support from the local people, Xihai Village in Foshan gradually developed into a significant counter-Japanese base. Forces stationed there carried out over 30 military operations, inflicting heavy casualties on Japanese troops, their puppet allies, and resistant forces. They achieved victory in six key battles, most notably the "Xihai Great Victory", a famous battle in Guangdong's behind-enemy-lines warfare where a smaller force defeated a much larger one, making the area a symbol of resistance in the Pearl River Delta region.

Listed in the second batch of Counter-Japanese War National Memorial Facilities and Sites List in 2015, Xihai Counter-Japanese Martyr Cemetery includes the Martyrs Monument, Cemetery Park and the Shunde Counter-Japanese War Cultural Relics Exhibition Hall.
