The Martyrs Cemetery was built to commemorate the martyrs of the 19th Route Army of the National Revolutionary Army in the Battle of Songhu during the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression in 1932.

In 1932, the 19th Route Army stationed in Songhu area strongly resisted the Japanese Marines aggressed Zhabei District, Shanghaitill the end of theSonghu Battle. The army was mostly composed of Cantonese soldiers, and in 1933, overseas Chinese donated to construct the Martyrs Cemetery.

Announced as the National Excellent Modern Architectural Unit in 1990, Martyrs Cemetery was listed in the first batch of Counter-Japanese War National-Level Memorial Facilities and Sites in 2014.

十九路军淞沪抗日阵亡将士陵园为纪念国民革命军十九路军1932年淞沪抗日战役阵亡将士而建成。1932年1月28日日本海军陆战队进犯上海闸北,遭到驻防淞沪地区十九路军的顽强抵抗至淞沪抗战结束。由于十九路军是一支基本由广东人组成的军队,1933年华侨捐资建成烈士陵园。

1990年被公布为全国近代优秀建筑单位,2014年被列入第一批国家级抗战纪念设施、遗址名录。
